This group includes spiders, scorpions, and ticks. It also includes horseshoe crabs that live in the sea.

Some of these animals lived a long time ago, like sea scorpions.

Most chelicerates have two main body parts. One part is the prosoma, which is the front section. The other part is the opisthosoma, or the abdomen.

They have hard shells called a cuticle. This shell is made of chitin and proteins. Because the shell does not stretch, they must molt to grow. This means they shed their old shell to make a new one.

Near their mouths, they have special parts called chelicerae. These are often small pincers for eating. In spiders, these parts are fangs. Spiders use them to inject venom into their prey.

Many chelicerates also use tiny bristles to feel their world. These hairs help them sense air and vibrations. Some hunters even have very sharp eyesight.
