These animals are often long and thin. Most are very small. One kind can reach 4 cm in length. Long ago, a kind called Ceratiocaris grew to 75 cm.

Leptostracans have a special shell called a carapace. This shell has two parts. It covers their head and middle body. The shell also works as a brood pouch. This is a safe place for their babies to grow.

These animals eat in a special way. They are filter-feeders. This means they catch food from the water. They use eight pairs of legs to do this. These legs look like small leaves. They do not use these legs to swim.

They have many parts on their heads. They have two pairs of antennae, which are feelers. They also have eyes on stalks. They breathe using gills on their legs. They also breathe through a thin skin inside their shell.
