Most have long bodies. A shell called a carapace covers their middle parts. Their heads point down. Most have one single eye in the middle of their head. They use large, branched arms to swim.

These animals have a clever way to survive. When life is good, they make female clones. This is a way to make babies without a mate. But when life gets hard, they make males. This leads to sexual reproduction. They make special eggs called ephippia. These eggs have a tough shell. They can stay safe in dry mud for many years. The wind can even carry them to new places.

The eggs hatch when the water is good again. Some fossils show these animals lived a long time ago. The oldest fossils are from the Jurassic period. This was a time many millions of years ago.
