Most water fleas have a very specific way of working. They have long bodies with a shell called a carapace. This shell covers their middle parts, known as the thorax and abdomen. Their heads point downward toward the bottom. Most species have one single compound eye in the middle of their head. They use two pairs of antennae to move around. The second pair of antennae is large and branched. These big arms have strong muscles to help them swim. 
These animals have a clever way to handle hard times. This way of life is called cyclical parthenogenesis. When life in the water is good, they make female clones. This means they make babies that are exactly like them. This happens without needing a mate. When conditions get bad, they start making males instead. This leads to sexual reproduction. They then create special resting eggs called ephippia. These eggs have a tough extra shell for protection. 
The history of these creatures goes back a very long time. The oldest confirmed fossils are from the Early Jurassic in Asia. These fossils belong to both living and extinct groups. This shows they were already spreading out before the Jurassic began. Scientists think they might have started even earlier in the Paleozoic era. Some fossils from the middle Permian in France have also been found. One group called Ebullitiocaris might be a diplostracan too. However, scientists are not certain because they only found their shells.
You can see how these tiny animals connect to the big world. Their special ephippia eggs can survive in dry mud for many years. The wind can even carry these eggs to new places. This helps them spread to far away habitats. When the water returns, the eggs hatch into new life. You might see them in a small pond or a lake. Some even live in the leaf litter at the bottom. Even the large Leptodora can grow up to 18 mm long.

The physical structure of a typical water flea is highly specialized for its environment. Most species possess a long body that is covered by a folded shell called a carapace. This carapace protects the thorax and the abdomen, which do not appear segmented from the outside. The head is usually angled downward and may be separated from the body by a notch called a cervical sinus. 
Feeding and respiration in diplostracans rely on specific biological mechanisms. The mouthparts are relatively small and consist of several parts: a labrum, a pair of mandibles, a pair of maxillae, and a labium. These parts allow the animal to consume organic detritus and bacteria. To move through the water, the thorax bears five or six pairs of leaf-like appendages. These appendages are covered in many tiny hairs called setae. Unlike many larger animals, diplostracans do not have specialized lungs or gills for breathing. Instead, they take up oxygen and release carbon dioxide directly through their body surface.
One of the most remarkable traits of this group is their method of reproduction, known as cyclical parthenogenesis. 

The ephippia are essential for the survival and movement of the species. Because these eggs are so hardy, they can survive in dried-up puddles or soil for many years. They can even be transported over long distances by the wind. Once the eggs reach a new habitat with favorable conditions, they hatch and begin the lifecycle again. This ability to disperse widely allows many diplostracan species to have a cosmopolitan distribution, meaning they are found almost everywhere. This cycle ensures that the population can survive even if their original home disappears.
The evolutionary history of the Diplostraca is quite deep, though some parts remain a mystery. While some fossils from the Paleozoic have been suggested to be diplostracans, none have been officially confirmed. The oldest unequivocal fossils of the group date back to the Early Jurassic period in Asia. Because Jurassic fossils include both modern and extinct groups, scientists believe the group began to diversify even earlier, likely during the late Paleozoic. There is also a genus called *Ebullitiocaris* from the Devonian and Carboniferous periods that is tentatively placed in this group, though researchers are uncertain because only carapaces were found.
Today, the superorder Diplostraca is a complex and diverse group of organisms. It is organized into seven different orders and approximately 24 families. The genus *Daphnia* is one of the most well-known, containing about 150 different species.
