Ligia

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ligia are small bugs called rock lice. They belong to a group called isopods. Most of these bugs live on rocky beaches. They live near the tidal zone, where waves hit the shore.

These bugs need to stay moist. They live in places with high humidity, which means the air is very wet. If they go onto dry sand, they might dry out. They prefer to stay on rocks. Some species live fully on land. Others live near the water.

Ligia have gills to help them breathe. They can breathe underwater if they need to. This happens if a wave hits them. It also helps if a predator tries to catch them. However, they do not swim fast in the sea. This makes them easy targets for fish.

It can be hard to tell species apart. This is due to sexual dimorphism. This means males and females look different. Males are often larger and narrower. They also have longer antennae, which are feelers used for sensing. Females may be wider because of a brood pouch.
