The red rock crab lives by the sea. Some people call it the Sally Lightfoot crab.

You can find these crabs along the Pacific coast. They live from Mexico to Peru. They also live on the Galápagos Islands. Adults come in many colors. Some are red, pink, or yellow. Young crabs are dark brown. This helps them hide on black lava rocks.

These crabs have five pairs of legs. Their front two legs have small claws. The other legs are flat. The crabs walk on the tips of their legs. This helps them move very fast. They can even leap! This makes them hard to catch.

These crabs eat many things. They mostly eat algae, which are sea plants. They also eat small fish, clams, and bird eggs. Sometimes they eat dead animals like seals.

On the Galápagos Islands, they help marine iguanas. The crabs take ticks off the lizards. This is a cleaning symbiosis. That means both animals help each other. The crab gets food, and the lizard gets clean.
