Most barnacles live in shallow water. They stick to hard things. They might stick to rocks or ships. Some even stick to whales.

Adult barnacles are sessile. This means they stay in one place. They use a strong glue to stick. Most have a hard shell made of calcium.

Inside the shell, the animal has feathery legs. We call these legs cirri. The barnacle moves its cirri to catch food. It grabs tiny bits of food from the water. This is called filter feeding.

Some barnacles live differently. They are parasites. This means they live on other animals to get food. One kind is called Rhizocephala. These have very small bodies. They grow inside other sea creatures like crabs.

Barnacles have been on Earth for a long time. They lived here 325 million years ago!
