Trilobites were successful sea animals from a long time ago.

Their name means "three-lobed entities." This refers to the parts of their bodies. They had a hard outer shell called an exoskeleton. This shell was made of calcite, which is a type of mineral. Because of this, trilobites left many fossils for us to study.

These animals lived in the ocean for almost 270 million years. Over 22,000 different species have been described. They lived in many different ways. Some were predators that hunted other animals. Others were scavengers that ate bits of food. Some even swam in the water to eat plankton.

The largest ones grew to be more than 16 inches long.

Trilobites faced many hard times. Several mass extinctions caused many species to die out. This happened during the Devonian period. Eventually, the last trilobites disappeared about 251.9 million years ago. This happened during the end-Permian mass extinction. Only a few species were left by that time.
