Trilobites were highly successful marine animals from the ancient past.

Their name means "three-lobed entities." This name describes the way their bodies were divided. These creatures belonged to a group called arthropods. They had a hard outer shell called an exoskeleton. This shell was made of a mineral called calcite. Because calcite is a mineral, it fossilized very easily. This helped scientists find many remains in the ground.

Trilobites lived in the ocean for almost 270 million years. They filled many different roles in the sea. Some trilobites were predators that hunted other living things. Others were scavengers that ate bits of food on the floor. Some species even swam through the water to eat plankton. A few types might have even crawled onto land. Some even lived with sulfur-eating bacteria to get food.

Scientists have studied these fossils for a long time. The first trilobite fossils appear in the record around 520 million years ago. These early ones are often called redlichiids. They appeared in places like Siberia and the western US. Some of the earliest fossils come from Morocco and Spain. These fossils help us understand how the Earth has changed. They also help us learn about how life evolves.

Trilobites were very diverse throughout their history. They reached a peak of variety during the Cambrian and Ordovician periods.

Some trilobites were quite large. The largest known species was Isotelus rex. This trilobite could grow to be more than 16 inches long. Most trilobites had many different body shapes. Some had many segments in their middle section. Others grew sharp spines for protection.

Life was not always easy for these animals. They faced several mass extinction events. These events caused many groups to die out. One big change happened during the Devonian period. This led to the survival of only one order called Proetida. Eventually, the last trilobites disappeared about 251.9 million years ago. This happened during the end-Permian mass extinction. By then, only a handful of species remained.
