The end of the trilobite era came during the end-Permian mass extinction. This event occurred about 251.9 million years ago. By this time, only a handful of species remained. The last trilobites disappeared completely during this period. Despite their extinction, their long existence of almost 270 million years makes them one of the most successful animal groups in Earth's history.
