Lobopodians were strange, worm-like animals from a long time ago.

They are part of a group called panarthropods. Most lived in the ocean, but some lived in fresh water. These creatures are very important to science. Scientists think they are ancestors of animals alive today. These include velvet worms, waterbears, and many arthropods like insects.

Most lobopodians had a very specific way they worked. Their bodies were long and made of many segments. Each segment held a pair of short, stubby legs. We call these legs lobopods.

Some lobopods had tiny claws at the tips. These claws could have one, two, three, or even seven claws. Some animals also had spines or hard plates on their bodies.

Finding these animals in fossils can be tricky. One famous example is Hallucigenia.

For a long time, scientists thought it lived upside-down. They thought its legs were actually spines. Later, they realized the spines were on its back. They also found that the head and rear were swapped in old drawings. Another animal, Aysheaia, was found in the Burgess Shale in Canada.

Lobopodians lived during a time called the Cambrian period. Some fossils are from the Lower Cambrian stage.

Scientists find them in special places called Lagerstätten. These are sites where fossils are very well preserved. Most lobopodians were only a few centimeters long. However, some could grow to be over 20 centimeters.

Some even had poisonous spines that leaked chemicals.

Even though they lived long ago, they link to your world. You might know about waterbears or velvet worms. These living things are part of the same big family.

Scientists use fossils to see how these groups changed. For example, the gilled lobopodian Kerygmachela had a brain.

This brain helped it control its eyes and its front legs. Looking at these fossils helps us see how life began to grow complex.
