Kinorhyncha are tiny marine animals that live in mud or sand. People often call them mud dragons. These little creatures live in the sea at all depths. They are part of a group called the meiobenthos. This group lives in the spaces between bits of sand.

They are very small invertebrates. This means they do not have a backbone. They belong to a larger group called Ecdysozoa. Most members of this group have segmented bodies. Kinorhynchs are unique because they are the only ones with segments besides the panarthropods.

Moving through the mud is a special way of working. Mud dragons do not have legs or hair-like cilia. Instead, they have many spines along their bodies. They also have up to seven circles of spines around their heads.

To move, they pull their head inside their body. Then they push forward using their spines. The spines grip the mud to pull the rest of the body up. Their bodies have a tough outer layer called a cuticle. This layer is made by a thin layer of cells. As the animal grows, it must molt by shedding this old cuticle.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. The oldest known species is named Eokinorhynchus. This species lived during the Cambrian period in what is now China.

Cambrian forms could be much larger than they are today. For example, Eokinorhynchus had about twice as many body segments as modern ones. Most modern mud dragons have eleven segments in their trunk. Young animals start with only eight or nine segments. They add the last few segments as they grow up. This growth happens through six different juvenile stages.

There is much to learn about their bodies and lives. More than 300 species have been described by scientists. These species belong to 31 different genera and 11 families.

One group called Echinoderes is very large. It contains more than 100 different species. This makes it the most common genus to find. Kinorhynchs eat things like diatoms or organic material in the mud. They have a mouth at the tip of their head. This mouth leads to a throat called a pharynx. They also have tiny bristles to help them feel touch.

Understanding mud dragons helps us see how small life works. Their bodies are built to survive in dark, crowded spaces. They have a nervous system with a nerve cord and special clusters called ganglia.

They do not have a system to pump blood. Instead, they have a body cavity called a pseudocoelom. This cavity holds cells called amoebocytes. Even though they are tiny, their bodies are very organized. They show us how life can thrive in the tiny gaps of our world.
