Most lived in the sea. They had soft bodies and many segments. Each segment had a pair of short, stubby legs. We call these legs lobopods.

Some lobopodians had tiny claws on their legs. Others had spines or hard plates for protection. Most were only a few centimeters long. Some could grow to over 20 centimeters.

One famous animal is Hallucigenia. Scientists once thought it lived upside-down! They later found it was right-side up. Another group is called gilled lobopodians. These animals, like Kerygmachela, had gills to help them breathe.

Scientists found a brain in Kerygmachela. It was a small part called a protocerebrum. This part connected to its eyes and legs. Lobopodians are very important to science. They are thought to be ancestors of living groups. These include velvet worms, waterbears, and many insects.
