Dinocaridids were a group of ancient sea animals.

Their name means "terrible crab." This is because some were large hunters in the sea. They lived a very long time ago. They lived during the Cambrian period and survived until the Devonian period.

These animals had two main body parts. They had a head and a trunk.

The head had a pair of special arms. These are called frontal appendages. Some animals had soft arms. Others had hard, segmented arms. These arms sat just in front of the eyes and mouth.

The trunk had many segments. Each segment had flaps and gill branches.

These flaps moved up and down. This helped the animal swim forward. This way of moving is like a cuttlefish.

Scientists think these animals are stem arthropods. This means they are close relatives to modern arthropods. Arthropods include insects and crabs. These creatures lived in many places. We find their fossils in Canada, China, and Australia. They also lived in Russia and Greenland.
