Eurypterids are extinct animals that lived in the water.

Many people call them sea scorpions. But they were not real scorpions. They were part of a group called arthropods. This means they had segmented bodies and jointed legs.

Most eurypterids lived in the sea. Some lived in fresh water too.

Their bodies had two main parts. The front part was the prosoma, or head. It had eyes and six pairs of legs. The first pair of legs were chelicerae. These were small pincers used to move food. The last pair of legs were often wide. We call these swimming paddles. They helped the animals move through the water.

Eurypterids came in many sizes. The smallest was only 1 centimeter long. The largest was Jaekelopterus. It was the biggest arthropod to ever live. It could reach 2.5 meters in length.

Some eurypterids even left the water. Fossil tracks show they could walk on land for short times. They lived on every continent. Most died out a long time ago. They became extinct about 251.9 million years ago.
