Horseshoe crabs are very old sea animals.

They first appeared 480 million years ago. They have not changed much since then. Scientists call them living fossils.

These animals have many body parts. A hard shell covers the front part. This part is called a prosoma. The back part is the opisthosoma. In modern crabs, the back part is one solid piece. At the very end is a long tail. This is called a telson. It helps the crab flip over if it is upside down.

They use their legs to move and eat. The first four pairs of legs have pincers. They use spines on their legs to tear up food. The last pair of legs helps clean their gills. They also have up to four eyes. These eyes help them see movement in the water.

To make new crabs, they go to shallow water. The female digs a hole in the sand. She lays 200 to 300 eggs. Then she buries them to keep them safe. The babies hatch from the eggs. They grow and molt to become adults.
