Palpigradi

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Palpigrades are very small arachnids. People call them microwhip scorpions. They are tiny animals. Most are no more than 2 millimeters long. They have a thin, pale body. This body is made of many parts. At the end of their body is a long tail. This tail is a flagellum. A flagellum is a whip-like part. This tail can be half the length of the animal. It has 15 small parts. Each part has tiny bristles. This makes the tail look like a bottle brush.

These bugs have no eyes. They use their first pair of legs to feel things. They hold these legs up while they walk. They also have pedipalps. These are parts near the mouth. They use them to help them move. Most palpigrades live in wet soil. They like tropical places. They also live in caves and under rocks. They must stay in damp spots to live. They stay away from light. You can find them on almost every continent. They do not live in the Arctic or Antarctic. Most palpigrades are predators. They eat very small animals. One type eats blue-green algae.
