Phalangiotarbida

life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Phalangiotarbida were a group of tiny, extinct bugs. They are part of the arachnid family. This family includes spiders and scorpions. These bugs lived a very long time ago. Scientists first found them in Germany. They lived during the Early Devonian period. Many lived in Europe and North America. They lived near coal rocks. The last ones lived in the early Permian. This was also in Germany.

It is hard to know who their close cousins were. Most experts think they are related to harvestmen. They might also be related to mites or ticks. Mites and ticks are very small arachnids. Some bugs were even mistaken for harvestmen. One bug, Nemastomoides depressus, was thought to be a harvestman. Later, scientists found it was actually a phalangiotarbid.

There were many different kinds of these bugs. They belonged to many groups called families. One group was called Anthracotarbidae. Another group was called Architarbidae. These groups had many different types, or genera. For example, the genus Mesotarbus had many species. This included species like Mesotarbus angustus.
