Parasitiformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Some tiny bugs belong to a big group. We call them Parasitiformes. They are a type of arachnid. This group includes mites and ticks. Scientists have found over 12,000 species. They think there are up to 200,000 species in total.

Many people know ticks. Ticks are part of this group. They can live on animals. But not all these bugs are the same. Some belong to a group called Mesostigmata. This is a very large group. It has over 8,000 known species. About half of them are predators. Predators are animals that hunt other things. These mites live in soil or rotting wood. Some live in dust or bird nests.

Some mites eat fungi or pollen. Others are used to help farms. These are called phytoseiid mites. They help by controlling pests. We have found very old fossils of these bugs. Some were found in amber. Amber is hard tree sap. These fossils are 100 million years old. They show that these bugs have lived for a long time.
