Parasitiformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Parasitiformes is a major superorder of arachnids. This group contains many different types of mites. Scientists classify them alongside another large group called Acariformes. It is not entirely certain how these two groups are related. Some studies suggest they might be closer to other arachnids instead. This group is vital for understanding the diversity of life. It includes many creatures that interact with humans and ecosystems.

There are four main groups within the Parasitiformes. The first is Holothyrida, which consists of small scavenging mites. These mites are native to the former landmass of Gondwana. The second group is Ixodida, which contains the well-known ticks. The third is Mesostigmata, the largest and most diverse group. Finally, there are Opilioacarida, which are large mites with long legs. These mites have segmented bodies and many species are parasitic.

The Mesostigmata group shows how much variety exists in this superorder. There are over 8,000 described species in this single group. While many are parasites, about half are actually predatory. These predators are often called cryptozoan organisms. They live in many different environments like soil-litter or rotting wood. You might also find them in dung, carrion, nests, or house dust. Some species even graze on fungi or eat spores and pollen.

Some members of this group provide very important services. Phytoseiid mites are a specific type of Mesostigmata. They account for about 15% of all described species in that group. These mites are used successfully for biological control. This means they help manage other pests in a natural way. Another economically important member is the varroa mite. These different roles show how complex mite life can be.

Scientists have a good idea of how many species exist. There are currently over 12,000 described species of Parasitiformes. However, researchers believe the total number is much higher. The estimate for total species is between 100,000 and 200,000. This huge number highlights how much we still have to learn. Each new discovery helps us map the history of arachnids.

We can learn about their history through fossils. The oldest known fossils come from Cretaceous aged amber. These fossils date back to around 100 million years ago. They represent three of the four modern groups. These include Ixodida, Mesostigmata, and Opilioacarida. Scientists suspect that these groups diversified even earlier than the fossils show. This tells us these creatures have a very deep history.

Genetic research helps us understand their evolutionary timeline. The genetic divergence between these groups is relatively small. It is less than the divergence seen in Acariform mites. This suggests that Parasitiformes may have a younger origin. This origin likely dates back to the late Paleozoic era. Studying these connections helps scientists understand the tree of life. It connects small mites to the wider history of all animals.
