Parasitiformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Parasitiformes are a large group of arachnids. They are one of two main groups of mites. Many people know the ticks in this group. Ticks can live on animals. Other members of this group are much smaller. Some mites are very helpful to people. Scientists think there are many species in this group. They have found over 12,000 species so far. Some experts think there could be 200,000 species in total.

This group has different ways of living. Many members are parasites. A parasite lives on or in another creature. But not all Parasitiformes act this way. The Mesostigmata is a very large group. It has over 8,000 known species. About half of these are predators. They hunt other small things. These predators live in soil or rotting wood. They also live in dung or house dust.

Some mites have very special jobs. A group called phytoseiid mites is very useful. They make up about 15% of all Mesostigmata. People use them for biological control. This means they help manage pests naturally. These mites can also eat fungi. Some even eat pollen or spores. This shows how much variety is in the group.

Scientists study how these groups are related. One group is called Holothyrida. These are small mites that scavenge for food. They come from old lands called Gondwana. Another group is called Opilioacarida. These mites are large and have long legs. They have many segments on their bodies. Ticks belong to the group called Ixodida. These different groups help us understand arachnids.

We can learn about their past from fossils. Some fossils were found in amber. Amber is hard tree sap that preserves things. These fossils are from the Cretaceous period. They are about 100 million years old. These fossils show three of the four modern groups. They include Ixodida, Mesostigmata, and Opilioacarida. These tiny creatures have been around for a very long time.
