Most females have a long, sharp part at their tail. This is called an ovipositor. They use it to lay eggs on or in other bugs. These bugs are called hosts.

There are two main ways these wasps live. Some are endoparasitoids. This means the eggs grow inside the host. These wasps are often koinobionts. This means the host can still eat and grow while the wasp develops inside. Other wasps are ectoparasitoids. They grow on the outside of the host. Most of these are idiobionts. They paralyze the host right away. This keeps the host from moving or hurting the wasp.

Hosts try to fight back. They may hide or wiggle to shake the wasp off. Some even use poison to stay safe.
