Some bees act like cuckoo birds. We call them cuckoo bees.

Most bees make their own nests. They also collect pollen for food. Cuckoo bees do not do this. They do not build nests. They also lack a scopa. A scopa is a part used to carry pollen.

These bees use a way of life called kleptoparasitism. This means they lay eggs in the nests of other bees. The cuckoo bee finds a nest with food. It lays its egg in a cell. That cell has a pollen ball inside.

When the cuckoo larva hatches, it eats the pollen. It may also kill and eat the host larva. The host is the bee that made the nest.

Female cuckoo bees look different too. They often have less body hair. They may have a thick exoskeleton. This is a hard outer shell. They also have large mandibles. These are strong, saber-like jaws. Some cuckoo bees are even social parasites. They live in a group nest. They may kill the host queen. Then they take her place.
