This bird is a brood parasite. This means it does not build its own nest. Instead, it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. It often uses the nests of reed warblers or dunnocks. Female cuckoos belong to groups called gentes. Each group lays eggs that look like the host's eggs. This trick helps the eggs stay hidden.

Adult cuckoos also use a trick called mimicry. The bird looks like a sparrowhawk. A sparrowhawk is a predator that eats other birds. Looking like a hawk helps the female lay eggs safely.

Male cuckoos have a famous song. It sounds like "goo-ko." They sing this from a perch in the open. They eat insects like hairy caterpillars. These caterpillars are hard for other birds to eat.
