The koel is a large bird. It lives in Asia and Australia. These birds eat fruit and bugs. They also have very loud calls.

Koels use a way of life called brood parasitism. This means they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds. This helps the koel because other birds raise the babies. The female koel has brown feathers with spots. This helps her hide when she goes near a nest. This is called camouflage. It lets her stay unseen by the host birds.

The male koel looks very different. He has black feathers like a raven. The two sexes look different, which is called sexual dimorphism.

Some birds, like noisy miners, will chase the black males. They treat the males like they treat ravens. This may help the female koel. The other birds might be busy chasing the male. This lets the female reach a nest without being caught. Scientists are still studying how these birds are related. Some think there is one kind of common koel. Others think there are two or even three kinds.
