It is a summer migrant that travels between Europe and Asia. In the winter, these birds fly to Africa.

This bird is a brood parasite. This means it does not build its own nest for its babies. Instead, it lays its eggs in the nests of other birds. It often uses the nests of reed warblers, dunnocks, or meadow pipits.

There is a special way this bird works to hide its eggs. Female cuckoos belong to groups called gentes. Each gente is a group of females that favors one type of host bird. These females lay eggs that look like the host's eggs in color and pattern.

This trick helps the eggs stay hidden in the nest. Some cuckoos lay white eggs with brown spots to match dunnocks. Other cuckoos lay eggs that match the redstart. This matching helps the cuckoo eggs survive.

Adult cuckoos also use a trick called mimicry to stay safe. The cuckoo has a body and wings that look like a sparrowhawk.

A sparrowhawk is a predator that hunts other birds. When a female cuckoo looks like a hawk, other birds might stay away. This gives her more time to lay her eggs in a nest without being attacked. This protective mimicry helps the cuckoo finish its hard job.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. Carl Linnaeus first described the common cuckoo in 1758. He used the name Cuculus canorus for the species. The name comes from Latin words for cuckoo and melodious. The male's song is also why it has this name. His call sounds like "goo-ko" to our ears.

This song is often heard from a perch in the open.

There are many different types of common cuckoos in the world. There are four subspecies found in different places. One lives from Ireland to Japan. Another lives in western China and India.

A third type lives in North Africa and Iberia. The fourth type lives in Central Asia. There are between 25 million and 100 million cuckoos in the world. Most of them live in Europe and Asia.
