Clamator

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Clamator is a group of large cuckoos.

These birds are known for their loud calls. Their name comes from a Latin word. That word means "he who shouts." They have crests on their heads. They also have long, narrow tails. These birds are quite striking to look at. Their feathers are black, white, and brown.

These birds use a way of living called brood parasitism. This means they do not build their own nests. Instead, they lay one egg in the nest of another bird. They choose medium-sized hosts for this job. These hosts can be magpies or starlings. They might also use shrikes, bulbuls, or babblers. The mother does not push the other eggs out of the nest. However, the host's young often die. This happens because the cuckoo chick takes most of the food.

We know about these birds thanks to science. A German naturalist named Johann Jakob Kaup studied them. He created the name Clamator in 1829. The great spotted cuckoo is the type species for this group. This means it is the main bird used to define the genus. Scientists use these names to organize all living things.

There are four different species in this group.

You can find them in warm parts of southern Europe and Asia. They also live in Africa south of the Sahara Desert. These birds like warm, open, and scrubby places. Some species are migratory. They leave for warmer and wetter areas during the winter. The two African species have two different color types. These are called light and dark morphs.

Eating is a very important part of their life. Clamator cuckoos eat large insects. They have a specialty in eating hairy caterpillars. Many other birds do not like these bugs. This is because the caterpillars taste bad to them. The cuckoos do not have this problem. This makes the caterpillars a great meal for them.
