The laughing dove is a small, slim pigeon that lives in many warm places.

These birds are found across Africa and the Middle East. They also live in South Asia and parts of Western Australia. They often live in dry scrub lands or near farms where people live.

Because they live near people, these doves can become very tame. They are often seen in pairs or small groups. Sometimes, they gather in larger groups to drink at waterholes in dry areas.

These birds spend much of their time on the ground. They eat fallen seeds from grasses and other plant matter. They also hunt for small insects like beetles and termites.

When they need a drink, they go to the water's edge. Like other pigeons, they can suck up water. To raise their young, both parents work together. The male brings twigs to a nest made in a low bush. The female places the twigs to build a flimsy platform. They lay two eggs and keep them warm for 13 to 15 days.

People have been studying this bird for a long time. In 1760, a French zoologist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson described the bird. He used a specimen from Senegal for his work. Later, in 1766, the Swedish naturalist Carl Linnaeus added the bird to his famous book. Linnaeus gave it the scientific name Columba senegalensis. For many years, scientists put the dove in a group called Streptopelia. However, a study in 2001 changed this. Scientists moved the bird to a group called Spilopelia. This name was first used by Carl Sundevall in 1873.

There are several types of laughing doves called subspecies. These birds look a little different depending on where they live.

For example, the S. s. aegyptiaca in the Nile Valley is larger than others. Some birds in South Asia have a plain brown back. Other birds in Africa have a bluish-grey color on their tails. In 1898, these birds were released from the Perth Zoo. Since then, they have become part of the wild in Western Australia. This shows how birds can move to new lands.

An adult laughing dove has a very specific look. It has a long tail and red legs. The underside is pinkish brown with a lilac colored head.

On the sides of the neck, adults have a patch of grey and rufous feathers. This patch looks like a checkered necklace. Young birds do not have this neck marking yet. The bird also makes a special sound. It has a low, rolling call that sounds like a chuckle. This sound helps you find them in the dry grass.
