While many people just call them "pigeons," the rock dove is actually the wild form of the bird. Most pigeons you see in cities are domesticated versions of this wild ancestor. Wild rock doves are usually a uniform pale grey. They have two black bars on each wing and a white patch on their lower back. This white patch is one of the best ways to identify them.

These birds have a very interesting way of living and moving. In the wild, they love to live near rock formations. They find homes in cliffs, canyons, and even caves. They prefer to forage for food on the ground in open areas. Rock doves are very strong fliers. When they glide, they often hold their wings in a clear V shape. If a predator appears, a bird will take off with a loud clapping sound. This noise warns the rest of the flock to fly away quickly.

Humans have been interacting with these birds for a very long time. A German naturalist named Johann Friedrich Gmelin formally described the species in 1789. He gave it the scientific name Columba livia. The name Columba comes from the Latin word for pigeon or dove. Ancient Greek writers even used words meaning "diver" to describe them. They thought the birds looked like they were diving or plunging through the air.

There are many different types of rock doves around the world. Scientists recognize nine different subspecies. These include birds like the dark C. l. gymnocycla from Africa. There are also about 1,000 different breeds of domestic pigeons. These domestic birds can be red, brown, or checkered. This is because of mutations in their pigments, called melanin. Eumelanin makes feathers grey or black, while pheomelanin makes them reddish-brown.

Rock doves are incredibly successful living things. They are thought to have originated in Southern Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. Fossil remains in Israel show they have existed for at least 300,000 years. Today, there are up to 120 million rock doves worldwide. In Europe alone, there are between 17 and 28 million birds. They can even breed any time of year. This is possible because they can produce a special crop milk to feed their young chicks, which are called squabs.
