Domestic pigeon

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The domestic pigeon is a fascinating bird that lives alongside humans. These birds come from a wild bird called the rock dove.

While some people call them a subspecies, they are actually a huge group of over 350 different breeds. Humans have kept pigeons for a very long time.

They have been important as pets, food, and even as symbols. Because they can find their way home, they were used as messengers during the two world wars.

Many different traits in pigeons happen because of how they are bred. People choose certain birds to make new varieties with special looks. Some pigeons have a crest, which is a tuft of feathers on their head.

Others have feathers growing on their feet instead of scales. Some breeds, known as croppers, can inflate their crops with air to make a round shape.

Even their colors can change based on their parents. A bird's color is linked to its sex chromosomes. This means a male bird gets color genes from both parents, while a female only gets them from her father.

We have a long history of living with these birds. Records from Mesopotamia show people kept pigeons 5,000 years ago. Ancient Egyptians kept them too. The great leader Akbar the Great even traveled with thousands of pigeons.

In the 1700s, people in Europe began breeding "fancy" pigeons. They brought birds from the Middle East and South Asia to create new types. Even the scientist Charles Darwin studied pigeons. He even wrote a book about how animals change under domestication.

Domestic pigeons arrived in North America through European colonists. Some say they arrived at Port Royal, Nova Scotia, in 1606. Others believe they arrived at Jamestown or Plymouth in the early 1600s. Today, many pigeons live in cities as feral birds. These city birds are often seen as pests because of their droppings.

Because domestic pigeons mix with wild ones, it is hard to find pure wild rock doves. They are now rare and live in far-away places like the Outer Hebrides in Scotland.

Life for a pigeon starts with a tiny baby called a squab.

Squabs are born blind and covered in soft down. Both parents are very protective of their nests. They feed the babies a special "crop milk" that is full of protein and fat. This food helps squabs grow very fast. They reach their full adult size in only about four weeks.

Because they grow so quickly and can breed often, pigeon populations can grow very large very fast.
