It belongs to a group called the genus Columba. This group also includes the rock dove. These birds are found in many places like Europe and western Asia. Some live in the cold north and move when seasons change. Others stay in the same place all year in southern Europe.

They are often seen in parks, gardens, and even cities. In 2019, one was even found in Canada. This was a very rare sighting in the Americas.

You can recognize a wood pigeon by its special colors. Most of the bird is grey with a pinkish breast. Adults have green and white patches on their necks. They also have pale yellow eyes.

Young birds look different than the adults. They have lighter grey feathers and a grey bill. They do not have the white neck patches yet. These patches grow as the bird gets older. By the time they are six to eight months old, the patches are fully formed.

Learning about these birds has a long history. A scientist named Carl Linnaeus described them in 1758. He was a naturalist from Sweden. He gave them the scientific name Columba palumbus. He put them in the same group as other pigeons.

We also have very old clues about them. Fossil records show they lived in Sicily a long time ago. There were many different types of wood pigeons in the past. Some of those types, like those from Madeira, are now extinct.

Wood pigeons have a very busy way of living. They build simple nests out of sticks in trees.

They usually lay two white eggs in these nests. The eggs hatch after about 17 to 19 days.

Parents feed their babies a rich liquid called crop milk. This helps the young birds grow very fat and fast. The babies usually fly away after 33 or 34 days.

Sadly, many animals like crows or squirrels try to eat the eggs. This makes looking after a nest a hard job.

These birds are very active and social. They often fly in very large flocks.

You might hear them before you see them. They make a famous cooing sound. Some people think it sounds like the phrase "Take two cows, Teddy."

They also eat many things like grain, seeds, and fruit. They even eat small things like ants or worms. This diet helps them live in many different habitats. Most adults live for about three years in the wild.
