It is often found living near people and farms. These birds are very good at finding new homes. They are native to Europe, Asia, and northern Africa. However, they have traveled to many other places like Japan and North America. They are famous for being great colonizers. This means they move into new lands and stay there.

This dove has a very special look. It has a black half-collar on its neck. This ring is edged with white.

The bird is grey-buff or pinkish-grey. Its legs are red and its beak is black. The eyes look black from far away. This is because the pupil is large. The iris is actually red. Young birds are different because they have a brown iris. They also have a collar that is not fully grown yet.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A naturalist named Imre Frivaldszky first described them in 1838. He thought they were a type of barbary dove. The type locality for this species is Plovdiv in Bulgaria. Later, a French scientist named Charles Lucien Bonaparte described the genus Streptopelia in 1855. The name "decaocto" comes from the Greek word for eighteen. This name links to an old Greek myth about a maid. Some people in Europe even called them Turkish doves.

These birds move very quickly to new areas.

In 1974, fewer than 50 birds escaped in the Bahamas. From there, they spread to Florida and the United States. In Arkansas, they spread across 42 counties. They moved through the state at 12 miles per year. This was much faster than their spread in Europe. They can live in many places. They like warm areas with trees and food. They can even reach as far as the Arctic Circle.

Collared doves are very social birds. They like to live in big groups called flocks. Some flocks have as many as 10,000 birds! They mostly eat grain, seeds, and insects. They often visit bird tables in gardens. When they have babies, the parents work together. The female lays two white eggs in a stick nest. She sits on them at night. The male sits on them during the day. This helps the eggs hatch in about 14 to 18 days.
