These birds are very helpful because they have a natural homing ability. This means they can find their way back to their home loft. To use them, people carry the birds in cages to a new place. They attach a tiny message to the bird before letting it go. The pigeon then flies straight home so a person can read the note.

This method has been used all over the world for a long time.

There is a specific way the pigeon post works step by step. First, the birds are taken to a destination in cages. Next, a small message is attached to the bird. Then, the pigeon is released to fly back to its home. In some cases, like during the siege of Paris, birds were even carried out of the city by balloons.

Once the pigeons arrived at their home loft, a bell would ring to announce them. A watchman would then take the message tube to be read by clerks.

People have used pigeons to share news for thousands of years. The ancient Persians likely started the art of training these birds. Over 2,000 years ago, the Romans used them to help their military. Julius Caesar even used pigeons as messengers during his conquest of Gaul. The Greeks used them to send the names of winners from the Olympic Games to different cities.

Later, merchants used a regular pigeon service between Aleppo and İskenderun.

There are many interesting facts about how pigeons were used in history. In the 1800s, Paul Julius Reuter used them to fly stock prices between Aachen and Brussels. During the siege of Paris from 1870 to 1871, pigeons were very important.

During those four months, pigeons carried 150,000 official and 1 million private messages into the city. Some messages were sent on tiny Dagron microfilms. To make sure they arrived, people often sent the same message on many different pigeons.

Today, we use many different tools to talk to people far away. We have the telegraph, the telephone, and the radio. Before these were invented, pigeons were one of the best ways to send news quickly. Even newspapers used pigeons to report on yacht races. Some large yachts even had their own bird lofts on board!

Even now, some photographers use pigeons to carry digital photos on small flash media.
