They move items from one place or person to another. Most couriers work through special business contracts. However, some couriers are employees for a government or state agency. For example, a diplomatic courier carries official government messages. Couriers are different from regular mail services in many ways. They are often much faster and more secure. They also offer features like tracking and signature requirements. Because these services are premium, they usually cost more than standard mail. People use them when speed or safety is very important.

Modern courier services work in many different ways to get things delivered. In busy cities, you might see couriers using bicycles or motorcycles. For much longer trips, they use trucks, railroads, or even aircraft. Some companies use a hub and spoke model to move items globally. Large companies like DHL, FedEx, and UPS use this method. There is also a special type called an on-board courier. These are people who can travel anywhere at a moment's notice. They usually fly on commercial airlines to deliver items quickly. This is very helpful if a company needs a part immediately. It can prevent an assembly line from stopping or help a medical transplant arrive on time.

People have been using couriers for thousands of years. In ancient history, messages were delivered by hand using many methods. Some people used runners, while others used homing pigeons or riders on horseback. Xenophon said the Persian prince Cyrus the Younger was the first to use couriers. A famous Greek courier named Pheidippides ran 26 miles from Marathon to Athens. He did this in 490 BCE to bring news of a victory. This famous run is why we have long races called marathons today. In ancient Greece, specialized runners called Hemerodromoi were known for their great endurance. These day-runners carried important news and even watched for military movements. Later, the Greeks and Romans used horse-mounted couriers called anabasii to send commands quickly.

Courier businesses look very different depending on where you live in the world. In Australia, the industry is very competitive near the big capital cities. Australia Post is the only large company that serves the whole country. In China, many companies like SF Express and ZTO Express work locally. Some services, like E-EMS, are special deals between China Post and Alipay. In India, India Post is the largest service with about 155,000 branches. Most of these branches, about 139,000, are in rural areas. In the United Kingdom, the same-day courier market grew from London taxi companies. Many people there work as independent freelance couriers with their own vehicles.

Couriers connect our world by making sure things arrive when they are needed. You can see this in how we shop online today. In places like Bangladesh and Malaysia, almost all couriers can be tracked online. This lets you see exactly where your package is on a map. In the United States, couriers helped during the gold rush. A company called Wells Fargo was founded in 1852 to help. They shipped gold, packages, and newspapers across the West. This helped people stay connected to their homes. Whether it is a small letter or a huge crate, couriers keep the world moving.
