It is one of the largest shipping couriers on Earth. In 2020, the company made about US$85 billion in revenue. This made it larger than other big companies like DHL and FedEx.

UPS helps people by delivering goods through many different ways. They use trucks for ground shipping and planes for air shipping. They even deliver to post office boxes through special services.

There are many steps in how UPS moves a package. First, they pick up items from customers or businesses. In 1991, they created a handheld tool called the DIAD to record this information right away.

Next, the packages travel through large hubs to reach their destination. One main hub is UPS Worldport in Louisville, Kentucky.

This hub is the fifth busiest airport in the world for cargo traffic. After sorting, the packages are sent out on planes or trucks. Some items go to The UPS Store, which is a retail chain for small businesses.

James E. Casey and Claude Ryan started the American Messenger Company in Seattle, Washington. They began with only $100 in debt. At first, workers delivered items on foot or used bicycles for longer trips. In 1913, the company bought its first car, a Ford Model T.

By 1919, the company moved to Oakland, California, and changed its name to United Parcel Service. They even started using a conveyor belt system for packages in 1924.

UPS has grown by buying many other companies over the years. In 2001, they bought Mail Boxes Etc., Inc. and turned it into The UPS Store.

In 2012, they bought a company named Kiala to help with online shopping deliveries. Even though they tried to buy TNT Express in 2012, the deal did not happen. This was because the European Commission blocked the plan. UPS continues to grow by finding new ways to reach customers globally.

Today, UPS uses very high-tech tools to do its job. They use drones to fly health care supplies to people.
