It uses data and technology to help. It also manages pharmacies through a group called OptumRx. Optum also has a group called OptumInsight for technology and data.

The company has grown for many years. It started in 1974 as Charter Med Incorporated. A man named Richard Taylor Burke founded it. In 1977, UnitedHealthcare Corporation was formed to buy Charter Med. This new group made health plans for seniors. The company became public in 1984. It changed its name to UnitedHealth Group in 1998. Since then, it has bought many other smaller companies. For example, it bought Sierra Health Services for $2.6 billion in 2008. It also bought DaVita Medical Group for $4.3 billion in 2019.

UnitedHealth Group has faced many hard times and big changes. In 2024, a group of hackers used a ransomware attack. This is a type of cyberattack that locks files. This attack hit Change Healthcare, which the company had bought. The company said hackers saw some patient information.

The company's leader, Andrew Witty, spoke to the government about this. The company has also faced many lawsuits and fines. These were about things like how they bill for Medicare or how they treat mental health. In 2024, Brian Thompson, a leader in the insurance group, was killed in New York City.

You can think of this company like a giant web of health services. Just as a single road connects many houses, this company connects many different services. It links insurance, doctors, and pharmacies together. It uses huge amounts of data to keep things running. In 2022, they even helped by making some medicines free for some members. This included medicine like insulin. This shows how a single large company can touch many parts of daily life.
