Together, these units create a massive network of health support. This structure allows the company to manage everything from data to actual medicine. It connects the way doctors treat patients with the way insurance pays for it.

UnitedHealth Group has a long history of growth through many acquisitions. It began in late 1974 as Charter Med Incorporated. Richard Taylor Burke founded the original company in Minnesota. In 1977, UnitedHealthcare Corporation was formed to purchase Charter Med. This allowed the creation of a network-based health plan for seniors. The company became publicly traded in 1984. It eventually changed its official name to UnitedHealth Group in 1998. Since then, it has bought hundreds of other companies to expand.
