Honeywell International Inc. is a massive American multinational conglomerate.

A conglomerate is a large corporation made of many different business units. This company operates primarily in four major industrial sectors. These sectors are aerospace, building automation, industrial automation, and energy and sustainability solutions (ESS). Honeywell also manages the Sandia National Laboratories under a contract with the U.S. Department of Energy. As of 2025, the corporation employs approximately 101,000 people globally. The company is led by chairman and chief executive officer Vimal Kapur. In 2023, it held the 115th rank on the Fortune 500 list.

The company's modern structure is the result of several major mergers. In 1999, Honeywell Inc. merged with a company called AlliedSignal. The leaders chose to keep the name "Honeywell" because of its high brand recognition. This merger also moved the headquarters to Morristown, New Jersey, before they were later consolidated in Charlotte, North Carolina. Honeywell was a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average from 1999 to 2008. It rejoined that index in 2020. In 2021, the company moved its stock listing from the New York Stock Exchange to the Nasdaq. Recently, in 2025, Honeywell announced a plan to split into three distinct companies. These will be Honeywell Automation, Honeywell Aerospace, and Solstice Advanced Materials. Experts estimate the aerospace and automation divisions could be worth $104 billion and $94 billion after the split.

The history of the company begins with early inventions in temperature control. In 1885, Albert Butz invented the damper-flapper. This was a thermostat used to regulate coal furnaces in homes.

After a dispute with investors, Butz transferred his patents to a legal firm. The company eventually became the Electric Heat Regulator Company. In 1906, Mark Honeywell founded the Honeywell Heating Specialty Company in Wabash, Indiana. He manufactured a device known as a mercury seal generator. In 1927, the Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company and Honeywell merged. This created the Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company. W.R. Sweatt and his son Harold provided leadership for the company for 75 years.

During World War II, the company moved heavily into military engineering. In 1941, they developed a tank periscope and camera stabilizers. They also created the C-1 autopilot.

This autopilot was essential for precision bombing. In 1942, the company opened an Aero division in Chicago. This division produced turbo superchargers and fuel quantity indicators. In 1950, the company provided controls for the USS Nautilus, the first U.S. nuclear submarine. They also developed the Wagtail missile with the U.S. Air Force. In 1953, they created the Automatic Master Sequence Selector. This device acted like a player piano to control an aircraft's autopilot during different flight stages. This technology significantly reduced the workload for pilots.

In the mid-20th century, Honeywell expanded into computing and consumer goods. They entered the computer market through a joint venture called Datamatic in 1955.

By 1957, they sold their first computer, the DATAmatic 1000. In the 1970s, Honeywell became a leader in 14-inch disk drive technology. They used specialized designs like the Storage Module Drive (SMD).

The company also managed the Multics operating system project. This project was very important because its features influenced the Unix operating system. For many years, Honeywell was also the U.S. importer of Pentax cameras.

They sold these products under the Honeywell Pentax label.

The company's growth also involved significant international expansion. In 1934, they acquired the Brown Instrument Company. This gave them a relationship with the Yamatake Company in Tokyo, Japan. They also opened offices in Canada and the Netherlands. By 1936, they had their first foreign assembly facility in Canada. In 1965, James H. Binger became chairman and changed the company's name to simply "Honeywell." He shifted the focus toward international markets and higher profits. In 1976, the company acquired the French firm Compagnie Internationale pour l’Informatique. This helped strengthen their position in global markets.

Today, Honeywell's technology is found in many complex systems. They produce digital sensors, such as the digital compass.

These sensors are used in various electronic circuit boards. They also provide advanced cockpit displays for modern aircraft.

Their work in automation and aerospace continues to connect to many different scientific and industrial fields. From managing building temperatures to guiding spacecraft, the company's various parts work together to support modern technology.
