It specializes in manufacturing a wide variety of heavy equipment and machinery. The company is headquartered in Minato, Tokyo, Japan. KHI is recognized as one of Japan's three largest heavy industrial manufacturers. It stands alongside Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and IHI. The company produces everything from motorcycles and engines to aerospace and defense equipment. It also manufactures rolling stock, ships, and industrial robots. This massive scale allows the company to impact many different sectors of global industry.

The company operates through several complex industrial mechanisms. In the aerospace sector, KHI acts as a contractor for the Japanese Ministry of Defense. They build transport aircraft like the C-1 and the C-2.

They also develop turbofan engines, which are specialized jet engines used for passenger aircraft. These include the V2500 and the PW4000. In the realm of space, KHI develops payload fairings. These are protective structures that cover a rocket's cargo during launch. They also build docking mechanisms and parts for the H-II rocket system. This technical expertise allows them to support both military and commercial space exploration.

KHI's products can be divided into several distinct industrial categories. The rolling stock division is Japan's largest manufacturer of rail vehicles.

This includes high-speed Shinkansen trains, subway cars, and freight locomotives. The shipbuilding division, through Kawasaki Shipbuilding Corporation, focuses on high-performance vessels.

They build LNG carriers, which transport liquid natural gas, and large submarines. The industrial equipment division focuses on automation and infrastructure. They produce industrial robots for welding and painting.

They also build tunnel-boring machines used to excavate large paths underground.

The history of the company began with its founder, Shōzō Kawasaki.

Born in 1836, he worked in the marine industry from a young age. After surviving two offshore disasters, he sought to modernize Japanese shipping through technology. His first business order arrived in 1878. In 1886, he moved the business to Hyogo and renamed it Kawasaki Dockyard. The company went public during the Sino-Japanese War of 1894. Kojiro Matsukata served as the first president. By 1906, the company began diversifying into railroad and automotive parts.

Throughout the 20th century, KHI experienced significant economic shifts. During World War 2, the company was a major builder of combat aircraft, such as the Ki-61. After the war, they adapted air intakes from combat planes to create high-speed motorcycles.

In 1947, a new government shipbuilding agenda helped restore their profits. By the 1950s, Japan had become the world's largest shipbuilder. In 1995, KHI reached an agreement with China to produce massive containerships. This led to higher than expected profits in 1996. However, the company later faced continuous losses into the 21st century.

The scale of KHI's engineering is visible in its specific, massive projects. They produced the 14.14 meter diameter shield machines for the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line. Their tunnel-boring machines were also used to excavate the Channel Tunnel. In the transportation sector, they supply advanced railroad cars to the New York subway system.

These products serve both individual consumers and massive urban transit networks.

KHI's work connects to several broader scientific and environmental fields. The company is involved in developing new energy sources to replace fossil fuels. This includes wind power, biomass power, and photovoltaic systems. They also work on rechargeable batteries and hydrogen solutions for aviation.

In terms of environmental protection, they build systems to prevent pollution. This includes fuel desulfurization and sewage treatment plants. They even develop systems to recycle waste into fuel. This shows how heavy industry can connect with modern environmental science.
