Fujitsu has a long history that began on June 20, 1935. It was originally established as a spin-off from the Fuji Electric Company. This parent company was a joint venture between Furukawa Electric and the German conglomerate Siemens. Despite the complexities of the post-war era in Japan, Fujitsu remained largely unscathed during the Allied occupation. The company officially adopted the name "Fujitsu" in 1967. Before this, it operated under different names related to its origins. This long history makes it one of the oldest operating IT companies in the world.

Technological progress at Fujitsu is marked by several distinct generations of computing. In 1954, the company manufactured Japan's first mainframe computer, the FACOM 100. By 1961, they launched the FACOM 222, which represented their second generation of transistorized computers. The 1968 FACOM 230 "5" Series then signaled the start of their third generation. Throughout the following decades, Fujitsu expanded its product range significantly. They moved from mainframes into minicomputers, small business computers, and various server types. They also produced the FM-8, FM-7, and FM-Towns personal computer variants.

Growth for Fujitsu has often been driven by strategic international acquisitions and joint ventures. In 1990, the company acquired 80% of the UK-based computer firm ICL for $1.29 billion. In 1993, they formed Spansion, a joint venture with AMD for flash memory manufacturing. They also entered the Indian market in 1992 with a joint venture in Punjab. This project focused on manufacturing Electronic Digital Exchange telephone switchboards. In 1999, a major merger with Siemens created Fujitsu Siemens Computers. This venture became the fifth-largest computer manufacturing company in the world.

In recent years, Fujitsu has focused on high-performance computing and artificial intelligence. In June 2020, the company co-developed the Fugaku supercomputer with the RIKEN research institute. Located in Kobe, Fugaku was declared the most powerful supercomputer in the world. It reached a theoretical peak performance of 513.86 PFLOPS. This made it three times faster than the previous record holder. Fugaku also led in categories for artificial intelligence and big data analytics. Additionally, Fujitsu developed an AI monitor to recognize complex hand movements. This system uses crime surveillance technology to ensure people follow WHO hand-washing guidelines.

Today, Fujitsu connects various technological fields to solve modern problems. They provide essential components for 5G telecommunications equipment, such as those used by NTT Docomo.

The company also works extensively in cloud technologies and software-defined networking. They use software-defined storage to help businesses manage petabytes of unstructured data. This technology allows data to move between different locations, including the cloud and various hardware types. By combining hardware, software, and AI, Fujitsu remains a central part of the global digital infrastructure.
