The institution is recognized globally for its academic excellence and research output. It is a member of several prestigious organizations. These include the Association of Pacific Rim Universities (APRU) and the RU11 group. Keio is also one of only two Japanese universities in the World Economic Forum's Global University Leaders Forum. This status places it among a select group of institutions that shape global education.

The university operates through a complex system of campuses and research centers. It maintains five main campuses across Japan.

Additionally, it manages approximately 30 research centers. These centers focus on advanced scientific and social studies. One notable facility is the Keio University Research Institute at SFC (KRIS). This institute collaborates with international organizations like the W3C. This partnership involves other major entities like MIT and the French INRIA. Such connections allow for high-level international scientific cooperation.

Keio's academic structure covers a wide range of disciplines. The university offers many different faculties and schools. In 1890, it established its first university departments. These included Economics, Law, and Letters.

Over the decades, the school expanded significantly. It established a School of Medicine in 1917. Later, it added a School of Technology in 1944. Other newer additions include the School of Pharmacy in 2008 and the School of Nursing and Medical Care in 2001. This variety allows students to specialize in many different professional fields.

The history of Keio is a story of steady growth and adaptation. It traces its roots back to a school for Kokugaku studies named Shinshu Kan. This school was founded in 1796. However, the modern university began with Fukuzawa Yukichi. In 1858, he started teaching Dutch studies in Edo.

In 1863, the focus shifted to English studies. By 1868, he renamed the school Keio Gijuku. The name "Keio" comes from the era name used in 1868. The school moved to Mita in 1871. It was eventually granted official university status in 1920.

Keio has hosted many influential figures throughout its history. In 1916, the Bengali poet Rabindranath Tagore visited the campus. In 1922, the physicist Albert Einstein arrived to give a lecture. He spoke about his theory of relativity.

More recently, Sam Altman provided a lecture in 2023. The university also has a strong connection to Japanese leadership. Many former prime ministers and members of Parliament are alumni. This influence extends to the business world as well. Keio ranks second in Japan for alumni holding CEO positions in Fortune Global 500 companies.

The university is also known for its large financial resources. As of June 2022, Keio held an endowment of ¥78 billion. This is the largest endowment fund of any university in Japan. To put this in perspective, Waseda University follows with ¥29 billion. Kyoto University has ¥20 billion, and the University of Tokyo has ¥15 billion. These funds support the university's massive research and educational operations. In 2010, the university's total operating revenue was 197 billion yen. This revenue came from tuition, medical care, and capital gains.

Student life at Keio is vibrant and diverse. There are over 410 student societies, commonly called "circles."

Athletics are also a major part of the culture. The baseball team is a notable part of the Tokyo Big6 Baseball League. Keio also shares a famous rivalry with Waseda University. This rivalry is known as the Kei-So Sen. It includes many sports like rugby, rowing, and tennis.
