The company's modern structure is the result of several major mergers. In 1999, Honeywell Inc. merged with a company called AlliedSignal. The leaders chose to keep the name "Honeywell" because of its high brand recognition. This merger also moved the headquarters to Morristown, New Jersey, before they were later consolidated in Charlotte, North Carolina. Honeywell was a member of the Dow Jones Industrial Average from 1999 to 2008. It rejoined that index in 2020. After a dispute with investors, Butz transferred his patents to a legal firm. The company eventually became the Electric Heat Regulator Company. In 1906, Mark Honeywell founded the Honeywell Heating Specialty Company in Wabash, Indiana. He manufactured a device known as a mercury seal generator. In 1927, the Minneapolis Heat Regulator Company and Honeywell merged. This created the Minneapolis-Honeywell Regulator Company. W.R. Sweatt and his son Harold provided leadership for the company for 75 years.

During World War II, the company moved heavily into military engineering. In 1941, they developed a tank periscope and camera stabilizers. They also created the C-1 autopilot.
