A messenger is someone or something that carries news or items. This job helps people stay connected across long distances. People can work as couriers to deliver mail or packages. Some people use bicycles to move through busy cities. These bicycle messengers often carry a special messenger bag.

In many stories, messengers have very special roles. In Greek myths, Hermes was a messenger for the gods. He was also the god for travelers and merchants. In Islam, Muhammad and other prophets are called Messengers of Allah. These messengers share important messages with many people.

Science also uses the word to explain how things work. Inside your body, cells use chemical messengers to talk. These molecules are called hormones or neurotransmitters. There is also something called messenger RNA, or mRNA. This carries information to help a cell make proteins.

We use many tools to send messages today. Instant messaging lets us send text online very quickly. You might know services like Facebook Messenger or Yahoo Messenger. Microsoft also made services called Windows Messenger and MSN Messenger. Even NASA sent a probe named MESSENGER to Mercury. It launched in 2004 to study that planet.

Many artists use this name for their work too. Authors like Lois Lowry and Markus Zusak wrote books called Messenger. Musicians like Paul McCartney and Linkin Park have songs with this name. You can even find sculptures of messengers in cities. One bronze statue of a horse and rider is in London.
