Rengo is the largest national trade union center in Japan. A trade union is a group that helps workers.

This group represents many different people in their jobs. As of 2011, Rengo had over six million members. It is a very large and important organization. It helps people work together in many different ways. This makes it a major part of life in Japan.

Rengo works by bringing many smaller unions together. These smaller groups are called affiliates. As of July 2012, Rengo had 54 affiliate unions. It also has 47 local organizations. These local groups are found in each of Japan's 47 prefectures. This means they have a presence all over the country. They work to support workers in many different areas.

The history of Rengo began in 1989. It was formed when three groups joined together. These groups were Dōmei, Chūritsu Rōren, and Shinsanbetsu. In 1990, another group called Sohyo also joined them. Since then, the group has grown and changed. Many leaders have helped guide the organization. For example, Seigo Yamada was the first general secretary in 1989.

Many different kinds of workers belong to Rengo. Some members work in the textile and food industries. The UA ZENSEN union has about 1,780,000 members. Other members work with cars or in electricity. The JIDOSHA SOREN union has 784,777 members in 2020. There are also unions for teachers and postal workers. Even people in banks and at power plants are members. This shows how many different jobs Rengo covers.

Rengo also plays a role in Japanese politics. For a long time, it was linked to the Democratic Party of Japan. However, things began to change in 2012. The president, Nobuaki Koga, said they might rethink this support. In 2014, Rengo endorsed a candidate for the Tokyo leader election. This shows how the group can influence big decisions. It connects the world of work to the world of government.
