His main goal was to help Japan grow strong again. He wanted to move the country away from social conflict. Instead, he focused on making the economy much larger. This focus helped change how the world saw Japan. He is remembered for bringing people together through growth.

Ikeda used a special plan to reach his goals. He called it the Income Doubling Plan. This plan promised to double the size of the economy in ten years. He used tax breaks and government money to help businesses. He also helped create a safety net for all people. This meant more support for families and workers. The plan worked even faster than he expected. Japan's economy actually doubled in only seven years.

Ikeda had a long career before becoming prime minister. He was born in 1899 in Hiroshima Prefecture. He studied law at Kyoto Imperial University. In 1925, he started working at the Ministry of Finance. He worked there for many years through World War II. Later, he was elected to the National Diet in 1947. He served as the finance minister under Shigeru Yoshida. He also worked in trade and industry roles.

His time as leader was full of big events. He helped end a long strike at the Miike Coal Mine in 1960. He also worked to fix relations with the United States. In 1961, he met with U.S. President John F. Kennedy.

He helped start new systems for health insurance and pensions. He also passed laws to help people with disabilities find jobs. In 1964, he helped Japan host the Tokyo Olympics. This was a huge success for the nation.

Ikeda's work changed the daily lives of many people. Before his plans, Japan exported things like bicycles and textiles. After his work, Japan became known for high-tech electronics. The French president even called him a "transistor salesman." This showed that Japan was now a leader in technology. His leadership helped Japan move from rebuilding to growing. Today, he is honored with a statue in Hiroshima.
