Nobusuke Kishi was a very influential leader in Japan. He served as the Prime Minister of Japan from 1957 to 1960.

Kishi came from a family with deep roots in Japanese history. He was born in Yamaguchi Prefecture to a family of sake brewers. His family had once been part of the samurai class. Kishi studied law at Tokyo Imperial University and graduated at the top of his class in 1920. He chose to work in the Ministry of Commerce and Industry to help Japan's economy grow. This choice was different from many other smart students at that time.

In the 1930s, Kishi moved to a place called Manchukuo. This was a region in China that Japan controlled as a puppet state.

Kishi became a leader in the industrial development of this area. He helped create a Five-Year Plan to build heavy industries like steel and coal. He also helped start the Manchurian Industrial Development Company in 1937. This project was huge and used billions of yen in private money. Kishi wanted the state to guide how businesses spent their money. This way of running an economy became a model for other countries later on.

However, Kishi's work in Manchukuo involved very unfair treatment of people. To make industries profitable, he helped create a system of forced labor.

Between 1938 and 1944, about 1.5 million Chinese people were taken to work as slaves each year. These workers faced very hard lives in places like the Fushun coal mine. In that mine, about 40,000 men worked at any one time. Many people died because the living conditions were so poor. Kishi signed a decree in 1937 to use this labor during the war. He believed industry had to grow at any cost.

After World War II ended in 1945, Kishi's life changed again. He was sent to prison because leaders thought he might be a war criminal.

The United States occupation authorities did not charge or convict him. He was released in 1948 and later returned to Japanese politics. In 1955, he helped form the Liberal Democratic Party, known as the LDP. This party became the most powerful political group in Japan. Kishi served as the first secretary-general of this new party. He later became the Prime Minister in 1957.

Kishi's time as Prime Minister was marked by big disagreements. In 1960, he worked on a new security treaty with the United States. This caused the Anpo protests, which were the largest protests in Japan's modern history.

Because of these massive protests, Kishi resigned from his position. Even after he left, he stayed active in politics until 1979. Kishi also started a powerful political family. His brother Eisaku Satō and his grandson Shinzo Abe both became Prime Ministers of Japan.
