In the 1930s, Kishi worked in a place called Manchukuo. This was a region in China controlled by Japan. Kishi helped build many big factories there. He wanted to make the area strong for industry. To save money, he used forced labor. This meant many Chinese people were made to work as slaves. These workers had very hard lives. Many died because of the poor conditions.

After World War II, Kishi was sent to prison. Leaders thought he might be a war criminal. However, the U.S. let him go in 1948. He soon returned to politics. In 1955, he helped form the Liberal Democratic Party. This group became the main party in Japan.

Kishi became the Prime Minister of Japan in 1957. He worked to grow Japanese business. But many people did not like his choices. In 1960, he dealt with a treaty with the U.S. This led to the Anpo protests. These were the largest protests in Japan's modern history. Because of the protests, Kishi had to resign.
