Before he led the country, Ikeda worked in finance. He studied law at a university. He also worked in the Ministry of Finance for many years. He joined politics after the war ended. He was the finance minister under Shigeru Yoshida.

Ikeda became prime minister during a hard time. There were many protests in Japan. People were fighting about a treaty with the United States. Ikeda wanted to focus on the economy instead of fighting. He made the Income Doubling Plan. This plan aimed to double the size of Japan's economy in ten years. It worked very fast. The economy doubled in just seven years.

Ikeda also helped many people. He made new rules for health insurance and pensions. He helped people with disabilities find work. He also helped end a long strike at a coal mine. In 1964, he helped host the Tokyo Olympics. These games were a big success for Japan.
