After World War II ended, Japan entered a new era. From September 2, 1945, until April 1952, foreign powers ruled the country.

This period is known as the occupation of Japan. It was the only time in history that a foreign power occupied the nation. The Allies wanted to change how Japan worked. They aimed to stop Japan from making war again. They also wanted to turn the country into a democracy.

The occupation was a massive job for many nations. The United States led the effort with its military.

They were supported by the British Commonwealth. This group included soldiers from Australia, Britain, India, and New Zealand. Nearly one million Allied soldiers served in Japan over seven years. The Soviet Union did not participate in the occupation of the main islands. This happened because they did not want to serve under the American leader. The American military took care of many different areas. For example, the 24th Infantry Division looked after Kyushu. The First Cavalry Division helped manage Honshu.

General Douglas MacArthur was the most important leader during this time. President Harry S. Truman appointed him as the Supreme Commander.

MacArthur arrived in Tokyo on August 30, 1945. He made many rules to help the people. He told his soldiers not to assault Japanese citizens. He also told them not to eat the scarce food. In 1951, a new leader named General Matthew Ridgway took over. The occupation moved through different stages. First, the Allies worked to reform Japanese society. Later, they shifted focus to helping the Japanese economy grow.

Many big changes happened to the Japanese government. In the beginning, the country still used the Meiji Constitution.

However, MacArthur wanted deep social and economic reforms. He helped the Emperor stay on the throne. The Emperor agreed to follow the terms of the Potsdam Declaration. This declaration called for a parliamentary democracy. In 1947, a new constitution was passed. This new set of rules was written in America. It changed the Emperor's role to a constitutional monarchy. This meant his power was now limited by law. One famous rule, Article 9, said Japan could not maintain a military for war.

The occupation officially ended because of a peace treaty. The Treaty of San Francisco was signed in 1951.

It became effective on April 28, 1952. This treaty gave full control back to the Japanese people. This event is called restoring sovereignty. Even after the occupation ended, the United States and Japan stayed close. They signed a security treaty to work together. This allowed many American soldiers to stay in Japan. They were there by invitation rather than as an occupying force. This helped Japan move forward into a new time of peace.
