Japan has a very organized way of ruling its people. It is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary democracy. This means there is a symbolic leader called an Emperor.

The current Emperor is Naruhito. He serves as a symbol of the state and the unity of the people. He does not hold real political power. Instead, the Prime Minister is the head of the government. The Prime Minister leads a group called the Cabinet. This leader is chosen by the National Diet and then appointed by the Emperor. Currently, Sanae Takaichi has served as Prime Minister since 2025.

The laws in Japan are made by a group called the National Diet. This group is split into two parts called houses. The first part is the House of Representatives. It is the most powerful house in the land. It can choose the Prime Minister and control the national budget.

The second part is the House of Councillors. This house is often seen as weaker. Most laws are sent to this house just to be approved. If the two houses disagree, the House of Representatives can sometimes override the decision. This system helps different groups of people have a voice in making rules.

Japan's rules changed a lot after a major war. In 1947, the country adopted a new Constitution. This document replaced the older Meiji Constitution. Many people believe American officials helped write these new rules during the occupation. The new Constitution changed how the country works in many ways. It says that the power belongs to the people of Japan. It also gave women the right to vote for the first time. Most importantly, Article 9 says that Japan will not use war to settle fights with other nations.

One political group has been very important in Japan's history. The Liberal Democratic Party, or LDP, has been in power almost all the time since 1955. This long period of one party leading is called the 1955 System. Because the LDP has held office for so long, some call Japan a de facto one-party state. Out of the 32 prime ministers since 1952, 25 have been members of the LDP. Other groups, like the Democratic Party of Japan, have served as the opposition. Even with many parties, the LDP remains a very strong force in Japanese politics.

Making big decisions in Japan often involves many different people working together. It is not just about what one leader wants. Often, the government works with experts and business leaders in special groups. These groups are called deliberation councils. They help talk about hard jobs like changing taxes or fixing railroads. For example, a group in the 1980s helped change how the government grows. This teamwork between leaders, experts, and parties helps shape how the country runs every day. It is a complex way to make sure many interests are heard.
